The Spanish imperfect subjunctive verb tense has two competing forms –ra and –se which vary in frequency of use according to the country of usage, the dominant political power, the century in question and context. These two forms of the imperfect subjunctive have their origin in two different verb tenses in Latin, namely the pluperfect indicative (amaveram Latin amara Spanish) and pluperfect subjunctive (amavissem Latinamase Spanish).

Signifying the Abstract: The Male Gaze, Maternal Power, and Homosocial Bonds in Geoffrey Wright’s Film Adaptation of Macbeth

Shakespeare’s Macbeth has always been a favorite work for directors and screenwriters to adapt into film. It has everything a filmmaker could ask for: battles, murder, witchcraft, domestic drama, dark humor, and it is much shorter in comparison to longer tragedies like Hamlet. If you combine these attributes with the fact that no one has to pay Shakespeare royalties, Macbeth’s popularity for film adaptation is easy to understand. Certainly, Geoffrey Wright’s 2006 film adaptation of Macbeth fulfills these criteria.

Opium of the Masses: Religious Representation in Gloria Anzaldúa’s poem, “A Sea of Cabbages,” from Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza

The panel’s first presenter with explore Gloria Anzaldúa’s rebellious, much-contested Borderlands/La Frontera, an incredibly multi-faceted work the Chican@ movement has had to reexamine again and again due to its extremely unconventional mixture of poetry and prose, memoir and fiction, English, Spanish, and Nahuatl (an Aztec language). Borderlands/ La Frontera, as Anzalda’s most revolutionary work, presents a deeply holistic understanding of border reality from Anzaldúa’s unapologetically personal point of view.

Place is an important term in both literary studies, where the location of author and narrative have undeniable influences on a text, and in composition studies, where we create entire courses devoted to the study of a place and the people and language practices in that place. It is because of our interest in the term and our connection to Houston that we chose to focus our second issue of Plaza: Dialogues in Language and Literature on the topic of place, from the metaphorical to the discursive to the material.

Call for Proposals -- Spring Conference

Plaza: Dialogues in Language and Literature is sponsoring its second annual graduate student conference at the University of Houston to showcase student-written critical research and creative non-fiction works that enter a scholarly conversation and examine the role of socio-economic class structures in literature, rhetoric, composition studies, folklore and ethnography, linguistic studies, language and culture studies, and gender studies.Proposals are due January 30, 2012 should be a maximum of 250 words for individual presenters, 1000 words for panels of 2-3.

Memsahibs and Bo-kadaws: Representations of Feminine Imperial Authority in Burmese Days

Orwell’s Burmese Days is widely accepted as a comment on British imperialism in issues of race, class, and even gender. Scholars such as Daphne Patai emphasize the submissive role the few female characters of the novel play. Patai suggests that Orwell’s female characters are muted – unable to speak for themselves, their voices and language controlled by a dominant force when they do open their mouths (44). Historically and in Orwell’s novel, however, the women who occupied this world of imperialism discovered in their positions a powerful new authority over men.
