The new ionospheric station of San Miguel de Tucumán

At the end of August 2007 an Advanced Ionospheric Sounder (AIS), built at the Istituto Nazionale
di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Rome, Italy, was installed at San Miguel de Tucumán,
Argentina (geographical coordinates: 26.9 S, 294.6 E; magnetic coordinates: 15.5 S, 3.8 E),
particularly interesting for its location, near the southern peak of the equatorial anomaly.
AIS-INGV is a digital low-power pulse-compressed ionosonde. In order to reduce the transmitted
power, weight, size, power consumption, and to have an excellent reliability, advanced HF-radar
techniques were employed.

The Blake geomagnetic excursion recorded in a radiometrically dated speleothem

One of the most important developments in geomagnetism has been the recognition of polarity
excursions of the Earth’s magnetic field. Accurate timing of the excursions is a key point for
under standing the geodynamo process and for magnetostratigraphic correlation. One of the best-
known excursions is the Blake geomagnetic episode, which occurred during marine isotope stage MIS 5, but its morphology and age remain controversial. Here wes how, for the first time, the Blake excursion
recorded in a stalagmite which was dated using the uranium-series dis equilibrium techniques.

Methods commonly used
in regional geological analysis were
employed to study the visual landscapes
of the Sigüenza–Molina de
Aragón area (Spain). Landscape
data were compiled to produce a
landscape map and a photograph
catalogue. Lithological composition,
tectonic structure and recent erosive
processes are the main factors controlling
the visual landscapes. Territorial
properties, such as colours and
agricultural capacities, are controlled
by these geological characteristics.
The landscape map and the
photographic catalogue is the main
contribution of this paper.

Restoring earth surface processes through landform design. A 13-year monitoring of a geomorphic reclamation model for quarries on slopes

The application of geomorphic principles to land reclamation after surface mining has been reported in the literature
since the mid-1990s, mostly from Australia, Canada and the USA. This paper discusses the reclamation problems of contour
mining and quarries on slopes, where steep gradients are prone to both mass movement and water erosion. To address these
problems simultaneously, a geomorphic model for reclaiming surface mined slopes is described.

Dendrogeomorphology in badlands: Methods, case studies and prospects

Soil and vegetation are interacting factors controlling erosion. Soil degradation processes may affect the normal
tree and shrub development and inversely, vegetation can modulate the velocity and intensity of soil development
or denudation. A dendrogeomorphological approach can be used to study these interactions, allowing to
obtain a date and estimate mean or specific erosion rates. This is especially useful in an unrecorded badlands
and gullied environments,where the scarce vegetationmay be the only proxy available to quantify the different
geomorphic processes which have occurred.

Sheet erosion rates determined by using dendrogeomorphological analysis of exposed tree roots: Two examples from Central Spain

This paper describes the determination of sheet erosion rates by using dendrogeomorphological
methods on exposed tree roots. Two sites on the northern slope of the Guadarrama Mountains,
Central Spain, were studied: a popular trail in a Scots pine forest (Senda Schmidt, Valsaı´n) growing
on granites and gneisses, and an open holm-oak forest on granitic slopes (Monterrubio).

Geological factors of the Guadalajara landscapes (Central Spain) and their relevance to landscape studies

The landscapes of a territory are the consequence of its history; overlapped geological, vegetable and cultural histories
usually exist on a landscape. At the Mediterranean domain, however, a translucent vegetation exists, and its history is
closely related to the geologic and cultural histories, because low-technology agricultural uses on a different hardness rock
background control vegetation. Thus, in areas like the Guadalajara province, the geologic composition and the human activities
can be considered the primary conditions for landscape configuration.
