Irish foreign policy in the United Nations and European Union: influence and participation

The United Nations has had a central place in Irish foreign policy from the state’s
accession in 1955. Both political discourse and public opinion polls indicate
widespread support for the organisation as a source of international legitimacy and
as the appropriate forum to make major decisions regarding peace and security;
international human rights; and development.

The benefits of financial markets: a case study of European football clubs

This study analyses the performance of European football clubs which undergo an initial public offering (IPO). We use a unique panel dataset consisting of domestic and international performance data to develop an event study to investigate the effects on a football club’s on-field performance before and after the IPO. The study follows from the observation that, as financial markets are expected to exhibit a positive influence on the economy as a whole, football clubs who access these markets should benefit as well.

The Irish Research electronic Library initiative – levelling the playing field?

Purpose - The Irish Research electronic Library (IReL) is a nationally funded electronic research library providing online access to full text articles from thousands of peer-reviewed publications in a range of disciplines. This paper examines the opportunities that have arisen for academic libraries at a local level in terms of how they expose resources and promote the initiative. It discusses the challenges that have arisen as libraries enhance, or indeed introduce, value added services to their research community.

Effective partnerships in Open Distance Learning: implications of the Irish National Distance Education Centre model

The National Distance Education Centre in Ireland has adopted a cooperative and collaborative approach in meeting its primary aim of extending access to qualifications and training throughout Ireland to those who are unable to attend full-time education because of work, location, disability, or domestic reasons. This paper analyses the conditions which determine the effectiveness of partnerships and networks in the context of this experience.

Organised labour and migration in the global age: a comparative analysis of trade union responses to migrant labour in Austria, Germany, Ireland and the UK

Trade unions face multiple challenges at the beginning of the twenty-first century, including increased inward migration. The accession of eight countries from Central and Eastern Europe to the EU in 2004 in particular has created a new dynamic of labour migration in Europe, sometimes raising concerns about social dumping and a ‘race to the bottom’.
