Long-haul shipment optimization for less-than-truckload carriers

Less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers supply freight transportation services for small parcel shipments. These companies consolidate multiple shipments in vehicles to guarantee the efficiency of the system. A method for LTL carriers is presented to solve the long-haul routing design problem with capacitated distribution centers and time-constrained shipments. The method uses direct, hub-and-spoke, and stopover strategies to allocate shipments in the set of routes. The resolution method is based on a tabu search algorithm.

A cost-effective approach for developing application-control GUIs for virtual environments

In this paper we present a new approach for fast development of application-control User Interfaces (UIs) for Virtual Environments (VEs). Our approach allows developers to build sophisticated UIs containing both simple widgets (such as windows, buttons, menus and sliders) and advanced widgets (such as hierarchical views and web browsers) with minimum effort.

Quality of experience based provisioning for service providers

Nowadays Network Operators (NOs) are providing service guaranties to customers by largely overprovisioning their networks, but as the Internet keeps growing, this approach is unveiling important issues in terms of cost and management of the network. To optimize the resource usage, and to reduce the existing overprovisioning, in this paper we present a Cross-layer Autonomic Network Management System that permits Service Providers to perform cost-effective network resource reservation with their NOs.

The sustainability of the Barcelona port enlargement works

In the Barcelona Port enlargement, currently under construction, part of the new quays are
being backfilled with re-used materials such as tunneling waste, rubble from demolitions and dredged soils with poor geotechnical properties. This has resulted in a cost-effective and sustainable construction process that is one of the main goals of the Barcelona Port Authority (APB). A series of control tests have been carried out on the mentioned materials. In addition, dredged soils have been improved by preloading, a
procedure that has been closely monitored by instrumentation.

A grid representation for distributed virtual environments

Online error detection and correction of erratic bits in register files

Aggressive voltage scaling needed for low power in each new process generation causes large deviations in the threshold voltage of minimally sized devices of the 6T SRAM
cell. Gate oxide scaling can cause large transient gate leakage (a trap in the gate oxide), which is known as the erratic bits
phenomena.
Register file protection is necessary to prevent errors from quickly spreading to different parts of the system, which may
cause applications to crash or silent data corruption.

Dealing with non-functional requirements in model-driven development

The impact of non-functional requirements (NFRs) over software systems has been widely documented. Consequently, cost-effective software production method shall provide means to integrate this type of requirements into the development process. In this vision paper we analyze this assumption over a particular type of software production paradigm: model-driven development (MDD). We report first the current state of MDD approaches with respect to NFRs and remark that, in general, NFRs are not addressed in MDD methods and processes, and we discuss the effects of this situation.
