On-line end-to-end Service Level Agreement (SLA) monitoring is of key importance nowadays. For this purpose, past recent researches focused on measuring (when possible) or estimating (most of the times) network QoS or performance parameters. Up to now, attempts to provide accurate techniques
for estimating such parameters have failed.

Performance overview of the offset time emulated OBS network architecture

Optical burst switching (OBS) control architecture considers two different models for the management of the offset time in the network. The conventional OBS (C-OBS) introduces the offset time in soft-way by delaying the transmission of the burst relative to its control packet in the edge node. Another idea for an OBS architecture (E-OBS) comes from optical packet switching world and it intends to emulate offset time by means of an additional fiber delay unit introduced in the data path at the input port of the nodes.

Provisioning Quality Controlled Medium Access in UltraWideBand (UWB) WPANs

Quality of service (QoS) provisioning is one of the most important criteria in newly emerging UWB-operated WPANs, as they are expected to support a wide variety of applications from time-constrained, multimedia streaming to throughput-hungry, content transfer applications. As such, the Enhanced Distributed Coordinated Access (EDCA) mechanism has been adopted by MultiBand OFDM Alliance in its UWB MAC proposal. In this paper, we conduct a rigorous, comprehensive, theoretical analysis and have shown that with the currently recommended parameter setting, EDCA cannot provide adequate QoS.

Cross-layer multimedia quality enforcement through user aware information in wireless networks

Quality assessment of multimedia traffic is a hot topic. In this paper we present a Multimedia Management System, which can be used on-line to assess and guarantee the
quality of multimedia traffic in a wired and wireless network. The proposed platform uses both network and application layer metrics to build up a scalable quality assessment framework. The core of this framework provides means for traffic provisioning
capabilities by coordinating the network access and usage both from the wireless node and from the network access point.

Virtual topology design in OBS networks

The problem of burst losses in OBS networks has an impact on the service quality perceived by end users. In order to guarantee certain level of Service Quality (QoS) in terms of burst losses, wavelength resources have to be dimensioned properly. In this paper, we address the problem of the Virtual Topology (VT) design that concerns the establishment of explicit routing paths and the allocation of wavelengths in network links to support connections with QoS guarantees in the OBS network.

Design of a medium access control protocol that exploits the structures of vehicular networks

Vehicular networks (VANETs) have distinctive structures that distinguish them in comparison to general mobile ad hoc networks. In this thesis we identify the relevant special structures that do exist, and show how they can be exploited to design a MAC layer that provides better performance than a MAC layer designed without taking such structures into account.

A connection-level call admission control using genetic algorithm for MultiClass multimedia services in wireless networks

Call admission control in a wireless cell in a personal communication system (PCS) can be modeled as an M/M/C/C queuing system with m classes of users. Semi-Markov Decision Process (SMDP) can be used to optimize channel utilization with upper bounds on handoff blocking probabilities as Quality of Service constraints. However, this method is too time-consuming and therefore it fails when state space and action space are large. In this paper, we apply a genetic algorithm approach to address the situation when the SMDP approach fails.

Efficient utilization of bus idle times in CAN-based networked control systems

This paper presents a novel approach to networked control systems (NCS) analysis
and design that provides increased control performance for a set of control loops that exchange control data over the Controller Area Network (CAN). This is achieved by enabling the following functionality for each control loop: first, standard periodic messaging is guaranteed to ensure stability, and second, non-periodic additional messaging is added whenever the bus is idle in such a way that the aggregated control performance for all control loops is improved.
