Enforcing cooperation and providing quality of service in wireless networks

The purpose of this dissertation is to design algorithms that provide quality of service and enforce cooperation in wireless ad hoc networks. Using a simple network model, we first study the performance of some previously proposed cooperation-enforcing strategies and then present a new mechanism. We prove that our mechanism is robust to imperfect measurements, is collusion-resistant, and can achieve full cooperation among nodes.

Optimal Configuration of 802.1e EDCA for Real-Time and Data Traffic

The enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) mechanism of the IEEE 802.11e standard provides quality-of-service (QoS) support through service differentiation by using different medium-access-control (MAC) parameters for different stations. The configuration of these parameters, however, is still an open research challenge, as the standard provides only a set of fixed recommended values that do not take into account the current wireless local area network (WLAN) conditions and, therefore, lead to suboptimal performance.

Design and implementation of a GMPLS-controlled grooming-capable optical transport network

Aiming at better resource utilization, an
important requirement of future optical transport networks is the capability to accommodate subwavelength client flows efficiently. This can be put into action
thanks to the enhanced traffic engineering (TE) protocols provided within the generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) standardization. The present paper concentrates on the design and implementation
of a GMPLS-controlled grooming-capable transport infrastructure, namely, the automatically switched optical network (ASON)ÕGMPLS CARISMA test bed.

Preemption window mechanism for efficient QoS support in E-OBS network architecture

This paper focuses on the problem of quality of service (QoS) provisioning in optical burst switching (OBS) networks. OBS is a promising photonic network technology aiming at efficient transport of IP traffic by means of statistical multiplexing. The lack of optical memories, however, makes this
operation quite complicated. Problems such as unfairness in access to the shared transmission resources, facility in adopting
alternative and backup routing, scheduling complexity and so on arise in the conventional OBS architecture.

Self-organizing resource allocation for autonomic networks

Application-layer networks (ALN) are software
architectures that allow the provisioning of services
requiring a huge amount of resources by connecting large
numbers of individual computers, e.g. grids and P2P-Networks.
Self-organization, like proposed by the
autonomic computing concept, might be the key to
controlling these systems. The CATNET project evaluates a
decentralized mechanism for resource allocation in ALN,
based on the economic paradigm of the Catallaxy.

A detailed question set is required to test and measure the true extent that a software quality management system is adopted and implemented across a large company like AWE plc. The analysis of the gathered data reveals specific topics of weakness that can also reflect the cultural acceptance or resistance that management groups have towards the adoption of quality systems. Having identified detailed problems and barriers, effective strategies and programmes can be deployed to improve the level of implementation and, therefore, the effectiveness of a software quality management system.

Quality of Authentication in Ad Hoc Networks

With the emergence of ad hoc networking technology came efforts to provide necessary security support for ad hoc networks. However, due to challenging characteristics of ad hoc environments, providing the same level of security as in wired networks is often very difficult if not impossible. A more viable way to approach this challenge is to maximize the utility of the achievable security instead of trying to achieve perfect security at a prohibitive cost. To this end, we propose a Situation-Aware Security paradigm.
