Secondary Education in Ethiopia : Supporting Growth and Transformation

This report is on the secondary education in Ethiopia. The report analyzes the challenges of secondary education in the context of the government's growth and transformation plan and its stated goal of becoming a middle-income country by 2020-23. The education system in Ethiopia as currently organized, together with existing education policies, has served the country well as it has transitioned from a country with some of the lowest enrollment ratios in the world to one where universal primary education is within reach.

A study of school leadership, culture and structures in the context of inclusion of learning disabled students as perceived by school staff in mainstream secondary schools in Israel

Since the end of the 1980s the Western World of education has increased its awareness towards learning-disabled students (LDS), and current legislation favours the inclusion for these students as well as for students with other special educational needs in mainstream education. Despite this worldwide commitment, there is no consensus regarding the definitions of learning disabilities (LD), and assessment instruments used for the identification of LD are varied.

Relative effects of coeducation and single-sex schools on students' schooling, affection, and career choice: Exploring conventional and feminist perspectives

With the purpose of investigating whether two different secondary school types--single-sex and coeducational school--yield different schooling processes and outcomes, four major questions were raised: (a) Do the single-sex secondary schools affect students' schooling experiences? (b) Do the single-sex secondary schools directly or indirectly affect students' affective development? (c) Do the single-sex secondary schools directly or indirectly affect students' sense of their future? (d) Do the single-sex secondary schools directly or indirectly affect students' attainment of early occupation?

The use of school land laboratories among agriculture teachers in secondary schools in west Malaysia

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the use of the school land laboratory as an instructional resource in the secondary and secondary vocational agriculture schools in west Malaysia. This study employed a descriptive-comparative survey method. The population consisted of lower secondary school agricultural science teachers (N = 489), upper secondary school agricultural science teachers (N = 65), and vocational agriculture teachers (N = 27). The sample size were determined by a formula proposed by Krejcie and Morgan (1970).

"I can only cognitively coach so much": heavy coaching efforts amidst disciplinary complexities in secondary school classrooms

Coaching often rests upon a “causal cascade” (Atteberry, Bryk, Walker & Biancarosa,2008) that posits that collaboration with a coach leads to a change in the attitude, beliefs and practices of teachers and therefore improves student learning. If efficacy expectations related to
adolescent literacy are not met, instructional coaching runs the risk of being attempted and abandoned by secondary schools (Knight, 2007; Walpole & McKenna, 2008).

Do schools differ in suicide risk? the influence of school and neighbourhood on attempted suicide, suicidal ideation and self-harm among secondary school pupils

Abstract Background Rates of suicide and poor mental health are high in environments (neighbourhoods and institutions) where individuals have only weak social ties, feel socially disconnected and experience anomie - a mismatch between individual and community norms and values. Young people spend much of their time within the school environment, but the influence of school context (school connectedness, ethos and contextual factors such as school size or denomination) on suicide-risk is understudied.

Factors influencing the degree of computer use by high school teachers in selected Illinois school districts

Grounded in developmental change theory, the purpose of this study was to identify the factors that contribute to an individual teacher's degree of microcomputer use. The study consisted of case studies of the high schools in six selected Illinois school districts and a survey of the high school teachers in each district.

Why four critical decisions were made concerning school facilities at Lake Forest High School, 1960-1990: A case study approach

Schools, school boards, and administrations across the nation constantly face the challenge of providing adequate school facilities for students in their respective districts. A number of factors affect and are affected by the decisions that are made concerning these facilities. This research looks at one high school district, District 115, located in Lake Forest, Illinois, and the decisions that were made concerning school facilities needs from 1960 to 1990. During the time of this study, Lake Forest High School actually faced four separate decisions concerning facilities.

Effects of a museum-school collaborative on seventh-grade students of an urban public elementary school

It is hypothesized that direct experiences with objects in an art museum that link history with art, the past with the present, and art with other aspects of life, can contribute to students' ability to experience a more realistic, personal, and integrated understanding of life and times in the past and present. Their thinking might be expanded so that they no longer see subject areas as separate categories but as part of a larger whole--life--because boundaries have been removed.
