Introduction to some of the major genres of traditional Chinese poetry, fiction, and drama. Intended to give students a basic understanding of the central features of traditional Chinese literary genres, as well as to introduce students to the classic works of the Chinese literary tradition. Works to be read include: Journey to the West, Outlaws of the Margin, Dream of the Red Chamber, and the poetry of the major Tang dynasty poets. Literature to be read in translation. Taught in English.

From Early Tang Court Debates to China's Peaceful Rise

This volume presents new topics from Chinese history of the last 1400 years from a broad range of fields such as politics, religion, society, economy and culture. The refreshing eight articles give new insights on events as different as the inter-religious court debates of the Tang, the Jiaqing reform of the Qing, the China display on the Chicago World Fair in 1893, Christianity and state-building in Chaozhou, the Taiwan salt trade, Chinese indentured labour in World War I in France, China's rise and current internet regulation.

Nanchansi (Southern Meditational Monastery): Main Hall

Total from front on axis Also "Great Hall." Near Lijiazhuang Village, Shanxi. Three bays by three. Single eaved hip-gable roof. Eaves are supported on bracket sets (dougong) on top of columns, with no intercolumnar bracketing. Oldest surviving wooden structure in China. Built in 782, the hall underwent extensive repairs in the Song dynasty (ca. 1086), and also in Ming and Qing. The building was virtually destroyed during an earthquake in 1966, and it was reconstructed piece by piece from 1974 to 75.

The Metabolism of Desire: The Poetry of Guido Cavalcanti

The fact that Cavlacanti?s friend, Dante Alighieri, was a supremely fine poet ought not blind us to Cavalcanti?s own, rather different excellence. Both men were attracted to the dolce stil nuovo, the ?sweet new style? that emerged in thirteenth-century Florence. While Dante?s poetry was devoted to his childhood sweetheart, Beatrice, Cavalcanti?s poetry had more the tang of real-world experience: he struggled against unruly passions and sought instead to overcome love ? a source of torment and despair.

Mud and Ashes

The artist discusses the work in Mud and Ashes, his Master of Fine Arts exhibition held at Slocumb Galleries, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee, from March 28 to April 1, 2005. The exhibition marks a turning point in the artists work, occupying a beginning place as he completes his graduate career. The work consists of fifteen paintings and one sculptural installation. The paintings are on paper and employ local materials such as red clay, pollen, and beeswax along with traditional artists materials such as oil and charcoal.
