The book, using a small group of left-wing student activists as a prism, explores the complex politics that underpinned the making of nation-states in Singapore and Malaysia after World War Two. While most works have viewed the period in terms of political contestation groups, the book demonstrates how it is better understood as involving a shared modernist project framed by British-planned decolonization.

This talk introduces briefly the Avkat Archaeological Survey, a collaborative research project in north-central Anatolia which seeks to integrate a number of different approaches to studying the past, using recent technological advances to integrate disparate datasets into a cohesive framework of analysis. From the 1980s, there has been continued development of methodologies of archaeological field survey, as well as remote sensing techniques ranging from ground-penetrating radar to airborne radar systems and satellite imagery.

La Exposición Universal de 1878 ha quedado parcialmente eclipsada en la historiografía debido al
gran éxito de público alcanzado por otros certámenes celebrados en París antes y después de aquella
fecha. Sin embargo, su trascendencia en muy distintos ámbitos fue realmente notable. En el presente
artículo se hace un repaso general a sus contenidos y se estudian de forma más detallada tres contextos
de especial relevancia: la “Calle de las Naciones”, la sección colonial y las exposiciones de arqueología
y antropología.

(How) Do research and administrative duties affect university professors’ teaching?

We analyze the interaction between university professors’ teaching quality and their research and administrative activities. Our sample is a high-quality individual panel data set from a medium size public Spanish university. Although, researchers teach roughly 20% more than non-researchers, their teaching quality is also 20% higher. Over much of the relevant range, we find a nonlinear and positive effect of research output and teaching quantity on teaching quality.

Constructing Iron Europe : Transnationalism and Railways in the Interbellum

Conventional histories portray the development of railway infrastructures as a tool to build empires and nation states. Recent scholarship however, has stressed the importance of a transnational perspective beyond an exclusive focus on the nation state. The new perspective enriches both the history of modern Europe and European integration. Constructing Iron Europe demonstrates how during the interwar years key players saw railroads as instruments for building a transnational European community.

Lunch 'n Learn presentation: How we experience political races is dominated by opinion polls. Polling data can be confusing because of their sheer number. In 2008, hundreds of polls were released during the Presidential campaign. Is there a way to cut through the resulting noise? Four years ago Dr. Wang devised a statistical approach to analyze state polls to get a single, easy-to-understand snapshot of the race, viewed from the point of view of the Electoral College. In 2008, this approach made near-perfect predictions of the electoral vote count as well as Senate and House outcomes.

El nacimiento de la Filología clásica en España. La Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de Madrid (1932-1936)

Enmarcado en un proyecto más amplio que pretende trazar una Historia Cultural de los Estudios Clásicos en la España Moderna y Contemporánea, este trabajo analiza el proceso de construcción y conceptualización de la Filología Clásica desde finales del s. XIX (con el telón de fondo de la llamada “Polémica de la Ciencia Española”) hasta su culminación en los años 1932 y 1933.
