Representations of ‘Home’ from the Setting of ‘Exile’: Novels by Arab Migrant Writers

The attempt to come to terms with the meaning of home, both literally and metaphorically, has become a major concern in literary studies. This dissertation explores the various novelistic representations of home from the point of view of Arab migrant novelists. Home, which contains various references to architectural structures, nations, states, or belonging, can no longer be thought of as a generalized or unified experience. For the migrant writer, the concept of home takes shape as a result of interaction between the past and the present, with memory playing a powerful role.

Managing Moderation: the AKP in Turkey and the PKS in Indonesia

Moderation does not constitute a monolithic model and the difference in the moderation process will influence the way a political party manages its internal dynamics. The cases of the AKP and the PKS show that both have different levels of moderation due to the different contexts of their social and political environments. The AKP has to deal with an extreme interpretation of secularism in Turkey that influences the party’s members to refrain from any confrontation with secular strongholds.

The long-standing debate about the power of the British prime minister has focused excessively on formal instruments of control exercised within Whitehall. By contrast, not enough attention has been paid to the ways in which prime ministers use rhetoric, formally and informally, to maintain themselves in power and to achieve their policy aims. The term ‘rhetorical premiership’ is used here to denote the collection of methods by which prime ministers since 1945 have used public speech to augment their formal powers.

Towards component reliability testing for marine energy converters

The dearth of generally available, failure data that can be directly applied to marine energy converters (MECs) has been commented on for some years. The advancement of the industry will be fundamentally linked to proven reliability assessments, which is difficult on an industry wide basis. This paper describes how targeted component reliability testing could enable the establishment of relevant failure rate data for the marine renewable energy industry.

The Search for the 'Middle Sort of People' in England, 1600-1800

The ‘middle sort of people’ is a social group that has been the subject of increased historical research in the last decade. Many studies have been written, and many definitions offered of the group, its identity, and its membership. As a result, these overlapping groups and contrasting methods of definition have caused the nature and identity of the group to remain elusive. This study charts the evolution of the historiography of the ‘middle sort’, and the many attempts to produce positive and accurate definitions of the group.

A coarse-grid approach to representing building blockage effects in 2D urban flood modelling

The latest information and communications technology has enabled flood modelling in urban areas using high quality terrain data to simulate the detailed flow dynamics in local areas. However, the computational cost rises exponentially as the resolution goes finer. The advance of computing hardware is still a limiting factor for large-scale area or risk/uncertainty analysis modelling with fine resolution that describes the details of building features. Grid coarsening is the straightforward way to reduce the computing efforts for 2D flood modelling.
