Bifurcation to heteroclinic cycles and sensitivity in three and four coupled phase oscillators

We study the bifurcation and dynamical behaviour of the system of N globally coupled identical phase oscillators introduced by Hansel, Mato and Meunier, in the cases N=3 and N=4. This model has been found to exhibit robust ‘slow switching’ oscillations that are caused by the presence of robust heteroclinic attractors. This paper presents a bifurcation analysis of the system in an attempt to better understand the creation of such attractors. We consider bifurcations that occur in a system of identical oscillators on varying the parameters in the coupling function.

Cycling chaos: its creation, persistence and loss of stability in a model of nonlinear magnetoconvection

We examine a model system where attractors may consist of a heteroclinic cycle between chaotic sets; this ‘cycling chaos’ manifests itself as trajectories that spend increasingly long periods lingering near chaotic invariant sets interspersed with short transitions between neighbourhoods of these sets. Such behaviour is robust to perturbations that preserve the symmetry of the system; we examine bifurcations of this state.
We discuss a scenario where an attracting cycling chaotic state is created at a blowout bifurcation of a chaotic attractor in an invariant subspace.

Restitution or discrimination? Lessons on affirmative action from South African employment law

This article evaluates the usefulness of affirmative action, which appears to have become the cornerstone of South Africa’s campaign to achieve racial equality. Whether or not affirmative action is an effective tool to combat disadvantage depends on the legislative approach and its best application to the specific problems. The approach taken by South Africa re-opens the debate on affirmative action and offers the international community a new perspective on overcoming past wrong.

Communication Self Concept in Secondary Schools, An Exploratory Analysis

The Bercow Report (Bercow 2008) was commissioned in order to review support for SLCN in the UK. Following a systematic review, Bercow highlighted (amongst other issues) a level of inconsistency associated with SLCN support in UK secondary schools .

Scholars have conducted many literary and historical studies on medieval Arabic literary sources, studying aspects such as myths and legends, superstitions, faith/ religious beliefs, spirituality, medieval Islamic culture, trade and travel, pilgrimage, and so on and so forth. There is however, a dearth of information dealing with medieval Arabian-Persian-Indian seafaring in the Indian Ocean. Little focus has been placed on the language; in particular, the language of material culture or more specifically, nautical and maritime culture.

People Helping People - an Assessment of the Market Towns and Related Initiatives and the Extent to Which They Addressed Rural Poverty

Backpacker tourists frequently express “anti-tourist” attitudes and are confident that they contribute positively to their destinations. Ironically, they are sometimes characterised by stakeholders in destinations in less developed countries as neo-colonial invaders. In spite of their anti-tourist attitudes, in reality, backpacker tourists tend to stay in backpacker enclaves where the cultural and moral values of backpackers are dominant. This happens because they encounter many obstacles to enjoying the backpacking experience in an unfamiliar interregional (intercultural) environment.
