Academic presidential leadership: A study of the presidential leadership of Edmund J. James for the University of Illinois, 1904-1919

The survival for a college or university often hinges on the president's leadership. Leadership connotes decisive action, yet uncertainty marks many presidential actions. The dissertation uses a historical method to investigate the legacy of functions which underlay academic presidential leadership. The presidency of Edmund J. James for the University of Illinois from 1904 to 1919 illustrates a historical transition point in the leadership practices university presidents began to implement in response to the increasing number of functions expected of them.

Guidelines for the planning and implementation of cooperatives in rural and small community schools: An alternative for expanding opportunity for excellence and equity in education

The problem of providing quality programming in the public schools of Illinois was accelerated through the General Assembly's Reform Act in 1985. The question of how to improve quality and expand opportunities through developing cooperatives between schools as an alternative to consolidation is the project's central theme.

The role and function of department chairpersons in the collegial peer coaching environment

This research was designed and conducted to study the role and function of the secondary school department chairperson in a collegial peer coaching environment. Specifically, the study focused on the relationships between instructional staff and chairperson, chairpersons instructional leadership, the teaching practices of chairperson, and valuing, focusing, and modeling of collegial peer coaching by chairpersons. A case study research design was used that relied both on quantitative and qualitative methods and data. The study is a combination of a descriptive and an evaluative case study.
