Effects of a missile launching on waders and other waterbirds in the Meldorfer Bucht, Germany

Missile tests in the Meldorfer Bucht have been under debate for many years, especially since the test area has become part of the National Park Schleswig Holsteinisches Wattenmeer. Alterra Texel, as an independent institute involved in biological research in the Wadden Sea for many years, has been asked to quantify the effects of these tests by means of a brief field study. The results presented in this report are based on observations during a single observation day. Our results are combined with theoretical predictions and data from earlier studies.

Diffuse air pollution consists of an omnipresent complex mixture of pollutants that is emitted from many widely dispersed sources as traffic, industries, households, energy plants, waste incinerators, and agriculture. Globally, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause for morbidity and mortality. Exaggerated postprandial lipaemia has been implicated in the development of atherosclerosis, and by lowering postprandial triacylglycerol (TAG) concentrations, atherogenic progression may be delayed. Many studies have revealed that exercise, in particular acute exercise, can attenuate postprandial TAG concentration. Most of this evidence relates to studies conducted in Western participants.

Identifying genotype-by-environment interactions in the metabolism of germinating Arabidopsis seeds using Generalized Genetical Genomics

A complex phenotype such as seed germination is the resultant of several genetic and environmental cues and requires the concerted action of many genes. The use of well-structured recombinant inbred lines in combination with omics analysis can help to disentangle the genetic basis of such quantitative traits. This so called genetical genomics approach can effectively capture both genetic (G) and epistatic interactions (G:G).

Resource use efficiency in protected cultivation: towards the greenhouse with zero emissions

Protected cultivations are expanding all over the world, particularly in otherwise marginal agricultural land. However, protected cultivation involves the intensive use of resources such as soil, water, fertilizers, pesticides and energy. As a consequence, such intensive production systems are perceived by many as artificial and highly pollutant processes. Protected cultivation, and more particularly green-house production, has to be – and to be seen – more respectful of the environment. The greenhouse of the future will have nearly zero environmental impact.

Estimating the costs of reducing CO2 emission via avoided deforestation with integrated assessment modelling

Estimates for deforestation and forest degradation were shown to account for about 17% of greenhouse gas emissions. The implementation of REDD is suggested to provide substantial emission reductions at low costs. Proper calculation of such a costs requires integrated modeling approach involving biophysical impact calculations and estimation economic effects of these.However, only few global modeling studies concerning this issue exist, and the actual implementation can take many forms.

The implementation of ICT in primary schools in Hong Kong : perspectives from school heads and teachers

In recent years, the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education has become a widely discussed issue. This paper starts with a brief examination of the relationship of political changes to the rapid educational reforms in recent years, including the school-level implementation of ICT.
Specifically, the implementation of ICT in Hong Kong primary schools is investigated. Primary data are collected from school heads and teachers while secondary data are collected from the scholarly literature.

Thermophilic aerobic post treatment of anaerobically pretreated paper process water

Thermophilic waste- or process water treatment increases in importance as industries shift from end-of-pipe treatment towards integrated process water treatment. The need for process water treatment becomes evident as the levels of pollutants in industrial water circuits need to be controlled whereas the intake of fresh water generally diminishes. In the paper and board industry, high process water temperatures prevail and thus water treatment needs to take place under thermophilic conditions.

Leadership and the strategic planning process in two government secondary schools in Singapore

This thesis centres on the research problem of leadership and strategic planning processes in two Singapore government secondary schools, both of which were engaged in the strategic planning guided by the School Excellence Model (SEM) Framework launched in 2000. Many schools are apprehensive toward this mandatory requirement. They are unclear of the strategic planning approach, process, or model to adopt.
