Recruitment, Preparation, Retention: A case study of computing culture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Computer science is seeing a decline in enrollment at all levels of education, including undergraduate and graduate study. This paper reports on the results of a study conducted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign which evaluated students attitudes regarding three areas which can contribute to improved enrollment in the Department of Computer Science: Recruitment, preparation and retention. The results of our study saw two themes.

Joint Bluetooth/Wifi Scanning Framework for Characterizing and Leveraging People Movement on University Campus

Performance Evaluation of the Illinois Cloud Computing Testbed

Cloud computing has the potential to bring sophisticated computing facility at the door-steps of users. The performance of services hosted at a cloud generally depends on its computation, storage and networking models. Since the storage and communication costs in a data-intensive application usually dominate the overall cost, we analyze the performance of the storage and communication facilities of a cloud. Little work has been done to measure the performance of existing cloud facilities.

3R:Fine-grained Encounter-basedRouting in Delay TolerantNetworks

In this paper, we first characterize the fine-grained encounter pattern among mobile users found in a large-scale Bluetooth trace collected by 123 participants at the University of Illinois campus from March to August 2010. Our characterization
results show that the fine-grained encounter pattern is regular and predictable. We then present 3R routing protocol, which leverages the regularity of fine-grained encounter pattern among mobile nodes to maximize message delivery probability while preserving message delivery deadline.

COMFA: Exploiting Regularity of People Movement for Message Forwarding in Community-based Delay Tolerant Networks

believed that people usually stay in a social community [2].
In this paper, we exploit the regular movement patterns of
community members to design a new routing protocol called
COMFA, which forwards messages of mobile nodes carried by
community members.

Semantic Infrastructure for a Ubiquitous Computing Environment

This thesis investigates one of the fundamental problems for Ubiquitous Computing: managing metadata to enable resource discovery. This work presents a flexible and general model of metadata, and proposes to use ontologies as a formal language for the metadata of a Ubiquitous Computing Environment. Ontologies provide a common language for metadata among diverse and autonomous entities and spaces in the Ubiquitous Computing Environment. Description Logic is introduced as a formal language for metadata.

Real-Time 3D Video Compression for Tele-Immersive Environments

Tele-immersive system can improve the productivity and aid communication by allowing distributed parties to exchange information via a shared immersive experience. The TEEVE research project at the University of Illinois (UIUC) and the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley) seeks to promote the application of tele-immersive environments by a holistic integration of existing components that capture, transmit, and render three-dimensional (3D) scenes in real time to convey the sense of an immersive space. However, the transmission of 3D videos poses a great challenge.
