Spatial, temporal, and human dimensions of air pollution in Brisbane

Arriving in Brisbane some six years ago, I could not help being impressed by what may be prosaically described as its atmospheric amenity resources. Perhaps this in part was due to
my recent experiences in major urban centres in North America, but since that time, that sparkling quality and the blue skies seem to have progressively diminished. Unfortunately, there is also
objective evidence available to suggest that this apparent deterioration is not merely the result of habituation of the senses.

Balancing benefits of human genetic research against civic concerns: Essentially Yours and beyond - the case of Australia

Large human genetic databases, especially those that are biomedical and forensic, have emerged since the completion of the Human Genome Project. However, this development has occurred in a time of intense public ambivalence to life science and genomics innovations. Controversies revolve around genetic modification, stem cell technologies and human genetic databases. Debate about databases focuses on how to balance the benefits from genetic research against civic concerns, typically, privacy and unfair discrimination and, more recently, public trust.

This submission to the Academic Board Review of the UQ Bachelor of Science degree has been jointly prepared by the faculties of Biological & Chemical Science; Engineering, Physical Sciences & Architecture; and Social & Behavioral Sciences. It represents the outcome of discussions that have occurred between the faculties over the last year. In preparing our submission for the Review, we have sought to capture and present advances at the interdisciplinary boundaries whilst ensuring the expression and growth of fundamental knowledge in existing disciplines.
