Improved automated perimetry performance in elderly subjects after listening to Mozart

PURPOSE: To evaluate the performance of automated perimetry of elderly subjects naïve to AP after listening to a Mozart sonata. INTRODUCTION: Automated perimetry (AP) is a psychophysical test used to assess visual fields in patients with neurological disorders and glaucoma. In a previous study, Fiorelli et al. showed that young subjects who listened to a Mozart sonata prior to undergoing AP performed better in terms of reliability than those who did not listen to the sonata. METHODS: Fifty-two AP-naïve, normal subjects underwent Automated perimetry (SITA 24-2).

Empirical diversity indices applied to forest communities in different successional stages

In this paper we examine the precision of six diversity indices, four of them empirical when including in their formulae climax adaptation numbers. These numbers define the succession position of the plant species in five forest areas in São Paulo State. We simulated hypothetical forests and compared the results with a list of species in the five areas. Low agreement was found among the indices in succession stages. Including the climax adaptation numbers increased precision for only some indices.

Índices de trauma em pacientes submetidos à laparotomia

O Major Trauma Outcome Study (MTOS) é um estudo descritivo e retrospectivo da gravidade das lesões e evolução dos pacientes, considerado como o maior arquivo contemporâneo de informações descritivas de traumatizados.

Yeasts and filamentous fungi in bottled mineral water and tap water from municipal supplies

The main objective of this study was to analyse the occurrence of yeasts and filamentous fungi in drinking water as well as to investigate their correlation with the indicator bacteria of faecal pollution. Yeasts were detected in 36.6% and 11.6% of the bottled mineral on water dispensers and tap water samples from municipal system, respectively. Twenty-one (35.0%) of bottled mineral water and two (3.3%) of tap water samples were positive for filamentous fungi.

Phytoplankton community: indicator of water quality in the Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves Reservoir and Pataxó Channel, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil

The current study analysed spatial-temporal modifications of the phytoplankton community and water quality, during dry and wet seasons. The phytoplankton community was studied in three areas: Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves Reservoir (ARG), which is an important public use reservoir in RN, Pataxó Channel (PC-before water treatment), Itajá, RN, and after the water treatment (WTP). Water samples from the reservoir were collected during both dry (January, February and November, 2006) and wet seasons (March to June, 2006). Quali-quantitative analyses of phytoplankton were carried out.

Effects of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes on riverine fish assemblages: a framework for ecological assessment of rivers

Freshwater is a basic need for the mankind. Effective biological tools (ecologically based, efficient, rapid and consistently applicable to different ecological regions) are needed to measure the "health" of rivers. Adapting such tools over a broad geographic area requires a detailed understanding of both the patterns of organisms assemblage composition and distribution within and among water bodies under natural conditions, and the nature of the major environmental gradients that cause or explain these patterns.

Meningeoma de goteira olfatória: relação entre achados clínico-radiológicos e índice proliferativo (Mib-1)

OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo é correlacionar achados clínicos, radiológicos e índice proliferativo em meningeomas da goteira olfatória e analisar possíveis fatores preditivos de recidiva tumoral. MÉTODO: Foram estudados 15 pacientes portadores de meningeoma de goteira olfatória. O exame imuno-histoquímico foi realizado através do índice proliferativo calculado a partir da expressão do MIB-1. RESULTADOS: Houve relação estatisticamente significativa entre volume tumoral e edema.

Trauma de duodeno: análise de fatores relacionados à morbimortalidade

OBJETIVO: Avaliar os fatores preditivos de morbimortalidade em pacientes com trauma duodenal. MÉTODOS: Estudo descritivo retrospectivo de 77 pacientes com lesão traumática de duodeno, em um hospital universitário, de janeiro de 1990 a dezembro de 2005. As lesões Grau I foram excluídas. RESULTADOS: O mecanismo de trauma foi penetrante em 87% dos casos e fechado em 13%, sem diferença estatisticamente significativa na mortalidade nestes grupos. Atraso maior que seis horas entre o trauma e a cirurgia foi observado em 7,8% dos casos e não influenciou na evolução dos pacientes.

Trauma na gestante: análise da mortalidade materna e fetal

Foram analisadas retrospectivamente 26 pacientes gestantes traumatizadas, num período de nove anos. A média de idade foi 23,7 anos (16-42). A idade gestacional variou de dez a quarenta semanas (média 21,5 semanas); a maioria (46,1%) no segundo trimestre. O mecanismo predominante (65,3%) foi o trauma abdominal fechado por acidente automobilístico (atropelamento ou colisão). Na admissão, oito (30,7%) pacientes apresentavam alterações hemodinâmicas. Seis doentes (23,0%) apresentavam sangramento vaginal e, destas, quatro estavam hemodinamicamente normais.

Prevalência de hiperidrose entre estudantes de medicina

OBJETIVO: Identificar a prevalência de hiperidrose entre os estudantes de Medicina de Manaus/AM. MÉTODOS: Estudo observacional, transversal, do tipo inquérito que analisou a prevalência de hiperidrose primária entre os alunos de Medicina da Universidade Federal do Amazonas e sua relação com o índice de massa corporal (IMC) e o stress. Os alunos foram pesados e entrevistados. Utilizou-se questionários com perguntas preconizadas pela International Hyperhidrosis Society, para relacionar a hiperidrose com as atividades diárias de cada pessoa.
