Technology, Relationship and Support Institutions on Sectoral Systems of Innovation and Production in Brazil's Northwest Bio Ethanol and Sugar Agro-industry

This study focuses on the interactions between economic agents, verifying the assumption that innovation and competitiveness in an industry are systemic, with relatively diffuse sources, which co-evolve. In this sense, were used the approach of the Sectoral Innovation System defined by Malerba (2002), analyzing the relationship between three dimensions of analysis: organizations, institutions and technologies. The object of this study was the Industry of Sugar and Ethanol in Alagoas, the largest producer and exporter of sugar and ethanol in the Northeast of Brazil.

Innovation for Sustainability: Overcoming the Productivity of the Sugar-and-Ethanol Industry’s Conventional System

The article’s objective is to analyze a process of technological innovation incorporation in the realm of organic agriculture which, as per legal and conceptual definition, should take into consideration the economic, social and environmental aspects according to the proposals of sustainable development. This article presents the results of a case study carried out at Native Alimentos Orgânicos Ltd. , a Brazilian company producing organic sugar and ethanol with an exporter profile and responsible for the world’s largest organic agriculture project.

Water quality assessment in piracicamirim creek upstream and downstream a sugar and ethanol industry through toxicity tests with cladocerans

An environmental impact study was conducted to determine the Piracicamirim's creek water quality in order to assess the influence of effluents from a sugar industry in this water body. For this, toxicity tests were performed with a water sample upstream and downstream the industry using the microcrustaceans Daphnia magna, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Ceriodaphnia silvestrii as test organisms, as well as physical and chemical analysis of water. Results showed that physical and chemical parameters did not change during the sampling period, except for the dissolved oxygen.

Sugar cane bagasse as feedstock for second generation ethanol production: Part I: Diluted acid pretreatment optimization

Tons of sugar cane bagasse are produced in Brazil as waste of the sugar and ethanol industries. This lignocellulosic material is a potential source for second-generation ethanol production. Diluted acid hydrolysis is one of the most efficient pretreatments for hemicellulosic solubilization. The hydrolysate obtained is rich in xylose, which can be converted to ethanol by Pichia stipitis.

Sugar cane bagasse as feedstock for second generation ethanol production: Part II: Hemicellulose hydrolysate fermentability

Sugar cane bagasse is produced in Brazil as waste of the sugar and ethanol industries. This lignocellulosic material is a potential source for second-generation ethanol production; however a pretreatment stage is essential, which aims at removing the hemicellulose component by disorganizing the lignocellulosic complex. In this work sugar cane bagasse was pretreated by diluted acid hydrolysis resulting in xylose-rich hydrolysates, which could be fermented to ethanol by a strain of the yeast Pichia stipitis.

Comparison between sucrose, ethanol and methanol as carbon and energy sources for biological sulphate reduction

A review of integrated processes to get value-added chemicals and fuels from petrocrops

Twenty-one species of laticiferous, resinous, medicinal, wild-growing, oil-seed-bearing and essential-oil-yielding plants have been selected and studied for their potential to yield biocrude, which can be processed into oil. The spent residues obtained after the recovery of biocrude can be processed to obtain fermentable sugars, ethanol, aromatic chemicals and other value-added chemicals and fuels.

Fed batch enzymatic saccharification of food waste improves the sugar concentration in the hydrolysates and eventually the ethanol fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae H058

The enzymatic hydrolysis of food waste by commercially available enzymes and the subsequent ethanol fermentation of the hydrolysates by Saccharomyces cerecisiae H058 were studied in this work. The optimum batch enzymatic conditions were found to be saccharification pH of 4.5, temperature of 55!, glucoamylase concentration of 120 u/g, α-amylase concentration of 10 u/g, solid-liquid ratio of 1: 0.75 (w/w). Fed batch hydrolysis process was started with a solid-liquid ratio of 1: 1 (w/w), with solid food waste added at time lapse of 2 h to get a final solid-liquid ratio of 1: 0.5 (w/w).

Sugar cane juice fermentation by Zymomonas mobilis CP4 subjected to inhibition by ethanol and high initial concentration of substrate

Sugar cane juice fermentation by Z. mobilis CP4 subject to stress by ethanol and high concentration of sucrose was investigated. Supplementation with saponifiable portion of soybean oil deodourising destillate (SOD) at 5; 10 and 15 mL/L.The ethanol production resulted values of 15.91; 16.99 and 15.63 g/L respectively. Values of Yp/s 0.35; 0.36 and 0.37 were achieved, which represented 20.69; 24.14 and 27.59% respectively higher when unsupplemented medium fermentation was carried out.
