Cornell University 2007 When Claritin (a popular allergy/antihistamine drug) and Prilosec (a popular anti-ulcer/anti-acid drug) became available over the counter (OTC), a unique situation was created in which a drug was now available OTC while close substitutes remained prescription (Rx) only. The OTC/Rx status of a drug should not affect physician recommendations for it or others in its class as no chemical change has occurred.

Interventions designed to improve the quality and efficiency of medication use in managed care: A critical review of the literature – 2001–2007

Background: Managed care organizations use a variety of strategies to reduce the cost and improve the quality of medication use. The effectiveness of such policies is not well understood. The objective of this research was to update a previous systematic review of interventions, published between 1966 and 2001, to improve the quality and efficiency of medication use in the US managed care setting. Methods: We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for publications from July 2001 to January 2007 describing interventions targeting drug use conducted in the US managed care setting.

Getting physicians to open the survey: little evidence that an envelope teaser increases response rates

In order for a physician to respond to a mailed survey, they must first open the envelope. While there is some evidence that package elements can impact physician response rates, the impact of an envelope teaser is unknown.

Principal-agent, risk, and market structure effects on health maintenance organization choice of payment method for primary care physicians

This research analyzes determinants of HMO compensation (salary, fee-for-service, and capitation) for primary care physicians. First, a theoretical model is constructed to analyze physician preferences for fee-for-service versus capitation based on payment risk characteristics. The analysis shows that capitation can be less risky than fee-for-service. A physician's ranking of payment methods may depend on her utility function, the health distribution of HMO members, and the relationship between payment schedules and the health distribution of HMO members.

The impact of financial incentives on firm behavior

This dissertation analyzes the impact of various financial incentives on firm behavior. The first two chapters examine product-market and input-market effects of a firm's capital structure and the incentives they create. The third chapter analyzes how incentives from the tort system affect physician location decisions. Chapter 1 examines the impact of union bargaining on capital structure determination. If a firm maintains a high level of liquidity, workers may be encouraged to raise wage demands.
