Scientific inquiry in high school science learning: Collaborative research activities applying scientific visualizations

This research utilized a multi-case, longitudinal study design to examine the theory development activities and high performance tool use of four teams of high school students and teachers. The science learning and research activities of these four high school teams were followed from the start of their research in the summer of 1994 until the completion of their research project in June 1995. This research examined the characteristics of scientific inquiry development, the application of scientific visualization during scientific inquiry and the effects of collaborations.

Body Mass Index: A Scientific Evidence-Based Inquiry

OBJECTVE: To objectively and critically assess body mass index and to propose alternatives for relating body weight and height that are evidence-based and that eliminate or reduce the limitations of the body mass index. METHODS: To analyze the relations involving weight and height, we used 2 databases as follows: 1) children and adolescents from Brazil, the United States, and Switzerland; and 2) 538 university students. We performed mathematical simulations with height data ranging from 115 to 190 cm and weight data ranging from 25 to 105 kg.

Landscape Architectural Design as Scientific Inquiry?

This presentation discusses ‘landscape architectural design as scientific inquiry’ and exemplifies this with the description of a design process within climate-responsive design leading to new design knowledge. ‘Research and design’ are issues that need increasing attention within landscape architecture academia. Substantial contributions on ‘research’ and ‘design’ exist within architectural theory [1,2,3,4]. However, within landscape architecture, there are only few publications on this topic.

The discovery in neurology that the two sides of the brain think in distinct ways that are both opposed to each other and complementary might have consequences in a number of academic disciplines, and in philosophy and political consciousness as well. It is the purpose of this paper to apply concepts from the brain theory to an analysis of the rational foundations of scientific inquiry. To pursue this argument, it is nnecessary to take a position on the side of materialism or idealism, although the theory certainly is related to that issue.

Jo-Ann has her class develop a recipe for a drink and fosters their graphing skills as part of the activity. Jo-Ann and Richard run a "bubble festival" near the end of the year and afterwards, brainstorm ways to integrate more mathematics and science when they do it next year.

The Next Move: Steps Toward Change in Elementary Math and Science: Workshop 1. Guiding Student Ideas

Eliciting student ideas often reveals a wide range of prior knowledge and experience. In Workshop 1, teachers will consider steps they can take to steer student thinking and questioning and to bring focus to student investigations. A science teacher shows students a "mystery object" to stimulate his students to investigate where their town gets its fresh water. Other educators then review video of the lesson and discuss the effectiveness of this method.
