Radioisotope and Nuclear Technologies for Space Exploration

Radioisotope heat sources and power systems, traditionally fuelled by 238Pu, have been developed and used for spacecraft thermal management and to provide electrical power during many deep space and planetary science missions. The use of fission reactors in space, however, has been limited to high power applications in Earth orbit. Previous ground based research programs conducted by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission demonstrated the principal of nuclear thermal rocket propulsion but to date, flight heritage of nuclear propulsion has been limited to nuclear-electric propulsion.

Space efficient in-memory representation of XML documents

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a multi-purpose text-based format, used for storage, transmission and manipulation of data. XML documents are often held in main memory and processed via standard interfaces such as the Document Object Model (DOM). However, XML is inherently verbose, and the in-memory representation of XML documents by existing DOM implementations is up to ten times larger than the file size. This is a problem for machines with limited memory, such as mobile devices, where processing even moderately-sized XML documents requires more memory than is available.

Measuring atmospheric hydrogen cyanide (HCN) from space using the MIPAS-E instrument onboard ENVISAT

The potential to detect hydrogen cyanide (HCN) spectral signatures and retrieve HCN volume mixing ratios (VMR) in the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere (UTLS) from a space-borne infrared limb-sounding spectrometer is assessed. The primary aim of this project is to search for new molecular signatures using the infrared spectrometers and identify a unique tracer of pollution to separate two sources of pollution namely: industrial transport/non-coal emissions and biomass burning.

The Suitability of the Iasi Instrument for Observing CO from Space

This thesis presents a methodological approach to developing the capability of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) instrument to inform on the atmospheric concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), focussing on three key studies: 1) an assessment of the radiometric accuracy of the instrument; 2) the development of the University of Leicester IASI Retrieval Scheme (ULIRS) to convert measured radiances into a CO product; and 3) an investigation into the reliability and possible use of the ULIRS product.

Terrestrial and Space-based Applications of Microchannel Plate X-ray Optics

This thesis describes the continued development of square pore microchannel plate (MCP) X-ray optics with a view to their application on terrestrial and space-based instrumentation.
The development of a lab-based Imaging X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (IXRFS) is described, incorporating an MCP optic to relay fluorescent flux, excited from uniformly illuminated target samples onto a Charge Coupled Device (CCD).

Despite their importance, debates on the global culture industry and its effects on local cultures have often been framed by the dichotomy between global capitalist producers and local romantic consumers, which fails to locate dialogues between production and consumption, globalisation and localisation, at a specific historical and geographical crossroad. This thesis attempts to assess this crossroad, focusing on the construction of hip-hop scenes in Paris and Tokyo.

Nationalising People and Spaces: The Critical Discourse Analysis of Nigerian Newspapers between 1906 and 2007

While contemporary western Journalism works towards the ideals of objectivity in reporting
and democratisation in the reporting and development of news stories, for postcolonial
societies like Nigeria, print journalism remains an elitist part of the public sphere,
predominantly constructing and representing the worldviews of a small politico-economic
group. While this might be regarded positively as the media working as a social watchdog,
such intense focus on a small section of the society to the exclusion of others is deserving of
accusations of bias.

This Is England: Class, Culture, and Ethnicity across Non-Metropolitan Spaces

This thesis is an empirical study of Thurrock, Essex. The research explored the settlement of Black-British Nigerians within the area and the response by the white majority. The research consisted of an extensive ethnographic enquiry that included a content analysis of local media, qualitative interviews and observations. The methodology re-introduced and embraced value as it provided a sociological analysis of political normativity; particularly in definitions and judgements of racism.

Measurement and quantification of CO2 from space

Satellite retrievals are used to observe the distribution of CO2 in the troposphere and to determine if the net surface fluxes in the lower troposphere can be calculated through combining normalised column CO2 data. Satellites used are the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and Scanning Imaging Absorption spectrometer for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY), which are sensitive to the upper and lower troposphere respectively.
